Lieutenant JG Mallow Darby

Name Mallow Darby

Position Chief Engineer - Ptolemy

Rank Lieutenant JG

Character Information

Gender Male
Species Alpha Centaurian
Age 30

Physical Appearance

Height 5'11"
Weight 154
Hair Color Dark Brown
Eye Color Gray-Blue
Physical Description Darby is a fair-skinned man who is notable for his lack of blemishes. This is of particular note because many Alpha Centaurians have various marks from being sunburned on their famously dual-sunned home planet, but he has been careful to remain in the shade and use clothing to prevent the damage that usually comes with dwelling there.

He emphasizes physical health and takes good care of himself, though this is an aspect of a philosophy of self-respect far more than it were anything relating to vanity. His brown hair is combed close to his head and kept in a prominent topknot that remains in place with the addition of a small blue tie.

Bluish-gray piercing eyes are perhaps his most prominent feature, and the reason for his slightly unusual first name. Mallow refers to a species of perennial blossom, and his mother suggested the name due to the connection between brilliant colors and certain varieties of flowers.

Those who were to look close enough might notice that his pinky fingers have an extra joint in them compared to most, which is something he shares in common with many other people who come from his particular offshoot of humanity on Alpha Centauri.

Family

Spouse Darby is a bachelor.
Children Currently Darby has no children, but he actually hopes that he could raise a family at some point in the future.
Father Julius Darby
Mother Nyssa Darby
Brother(s) He has an older brother named Joshua, who is not connected to Starfleet in any way.
Sister(s) None.
Other Family As is common for people who grew up on Alpha Centauri IV, he has grown very close to distant relatives he has that serve on the Elder Council, and he considers them to be a form of teacher to him.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Darby often seems relaxed in a calm way that allows him to keep a clear head when it comes time to do his job. One might have actually assumed that with his level head and clear thinking he could have made a name for himself in security. Some of these traits are the result of the practice of schools of martial arts and meditation that are well established on the Centauran home world. He credits these aspects with making him able to withstand the pressures of working in the high-stress engineering department and not breakdown when the going gets tough.
Strengths & Weaknesses While his calm and collected nature might be his strength, it can also make him look rather aloof. He has a slightly better than average esper rating at around 088 and an aperception quotation of 21/101, though he actually isn't trained to use any of these skills. Regardless, he can sometimes seem rather distant or unusual and these aspects make it hard for him to socialize at times. To make matters worse, he often can't even tell that he's off-putting.
Ambitions Having become something of a live-in-the-present type Darby isn't quite sure that he had much of an ambition beyond to do the best he can each day. Unlike many people, he actually really enjoys where he is in the chain of command and wants to remain in engineering.
Hobbies & Interests Perhaps due to the fact that he grew up on Alpha Centauri IV, Darby takes an interest in both traditional and holographic art. Both are genres that are well known to the world, and collectors seek after many Centauran art pieces. He has a piece or two himself, which he keeps in a computer signature for display when necessary.

Personal History Growing up in he Caladia settlement on the Shalaven continent on Alpha Centauri IV, Darby lived much of his early life in a secluded and fairly natural setting. Plenty of Centauran architecture features prominent geofronts and he valued the subterranean style homes and safe areas of his native homeland.

Studying anbo-jyutsu, botany and art in this setting was certainly fulfilling, even though it gave him a rather unusual personality compared to most Starfleet engineers. In fact, this seems to be a rather unusual beginning for an engineer anyway, but he deeply valued this time.

Perhaps it was all of those nights spent under the stars that lead him to study the interiors of interstellar drive systems, or perhaps it was how he came to view exploration as any other art form. Regardless of any of this, though, one day brought with it the wish to pack up his clothing and his collection of art as a series of replicator matter-energy signatures stored inside of a valet packet and attend the academy.

That being said, he found that he wouldn't have to travel far considering the Delthara University Complex was already located within the same system, and offered a very high quality of education. His early studies of both the arts and sciences proved to serve him quite well, though he generally turned out to be quite a quiet student considering the other types that were usually attracted to Starfleet officer training.

He notably developed a serious problem with the Kobayashi Maru test, as many other students over the years have. Many people end up complaining about it when they take it, but he took the extraordinary step of actually lodging a complaint and stating that it encouraged fatalism in younger officer cadets. While he failed the test, he was praised for his tenacity in this if for nothing else.

Regardless, he was ultimately assigned to a Federation repair ship where he was able to carry out his position as an effective engineer. Having been transferred as one of the myriad members of the engineering crew on board the tender USS Canopus, he seemed to be rather cooperative and efficient. Admittedly he wanted to look for the job of Chief Engineer aboard a scout or potentially the assistant on a cruiser, but he was entirely happy where he was.

Getting sent over to the USS Ptolemy may have been a dream, but in many ways Darby has always been the type to treat each day independently and take them all one day at a time. He never really rushed to get to where he was, and felt that working hard to ensure that a good job was done was always the most important thing.

That being said, he had never expected that a transfer request like that would have even really been approved by the brass at Starfleet HQ, so he was actually genuinely surprised by his career moves.

Naturally this has also encouraged him to avoid slacking off in his new position, and he isn't at all one to watch the world pass by. Some of this, of course, has to do with the philosophy that was ingrained in him as a request of the anbo-jyutsu training he took on in his earlier stages.

Though he doesn't have too much of a noticeable accent when he speaks, Darby continues to prefer some of his written documents in the Centauran lingua franca and has his PADD units configured to display this way. Fortunately they can easily be switched to any other language considering the internationalization of Federation technology.

Like some other prominent engineers, Darby stays abreast of the current technological situation by reading technical journals in his free time. While it might seem unusual to some people, it's provided him with plenty of additional training outside of that which is considered formal. He saw plenty of benefits on his previous assignment as a result of this.

Ultimately Darby plans to apply for a position on the board that grants the Zee-Magnees prize, though he figures that this will still have to be delayed several years as a result of his lack of an advanced age. He doubts that anyone would take him before he met certain types of academic and professional requirements anyway.
