Mission: In Our Time of Need
Location: Ring's Quarters

It was fourty-two paces from the doors to the far wall, and twenty-eight from the replicator to the bedroom door. These measly guest quarters didn't merit a real kitchen, or a portal. The bathroom was little more than a closet- enough room for the necessaries and no more.

Fourty-two paces...

Twenty eight...

A low growl escaped Ring as he paced the rooms, how many times he'd lost count. Round and round, no reason to stay, afraid to leave. He passed a generic vase on the end table and thought, as he had on every trip by it, that it annoyed him greatly. With another, louder growl, he lifted the vase and hurled it at the wall where a portal should be. If he could just look out, it wouldn't be so bad. A rumble of curses rolled from his lips, but then stopped.

What if he was here? In here right now, watching? What if they were? He whirled around, scanning the room but knew it would do no good. Thumb and his little Klingon pet could be anywhere, and he'd never know it. THey could be watching right this minute. He'd better be careful what he said, he was in so deep now there was no way out. And if he angered Thumb once more, the way out could be a permanent one.

My how the mighty had fallen. He'd been Thumb's number one man. Up until two days ago. Then he'd been spotted and demoted to errand boy, not allowed at the heist of the Klingon diplomat. If it hadn't been for that damned Betazoid, none of this would have happened. He'd still be right there in the thick of things instead of here pacing his quarters like a caged animal.

He'd like to kill her, that much was sure. It would make him feel much better. It was partly her fault he was afraid to go out. If she saw him again, she might pick out too much, and it would give them all away.

He stood before the door, so tempted, but his paranoia took over and he turned away, crossing the room once more. Soon it would be twenty-four hours since the Klingon vanished. He knew Thumb would be more wary these first hours. Once a day had passed, then he'd make his move. It was just like him to want to let the Federation stew and wonder what was going on.

They'd know soon enough.

He banged his fist against the wall. He had to get out of here. He has no assurances now that he would get out with Thumb. If they needed a scapegoat, he held no doubt that he'd be offered up. If it wasn't for that Betazoid, he could go out, have a drink, have some fun. But she was a danger, she could read him and know what happened...

If it wasn't for that Betazoid...

And then Ring grew still. The first hint of an idea glimmered in the dark recesses of his mind.

Slowly, he turned back towards the door.
