Will sat at his desk studying the reports on the three patients from the crash. The first had only had superficial wounds and had been treated and released. His followup appointment had showed he was doing fine, no need to be seen again. The second was in good shape as was his heart replacement patient. Will wanted to consult with Earl and Solis and if they concurred, release both.
“Ophelia!” He called out. “Get Doctors Crane and Solis up here.”
She poked her head in with a smile. “I already did and they are on their way.”
“Damned Betazoids,” he muttered, but smiled. “And thank you. Any word from the away team? Do we have a baby yet?”
Ophelia shook her head. “No, not yet. Kh’ali says he’s being stubborn. Imagine that….a part-Klingon kid being stubborn.”
Will had to laugh and shook his head. “True. Okay, send Frick and Frack in when they arrive, then you can hit the road if you want.”
“Thanks boss. Later.” She vanished back down the corridor.
“Okay, admit it. You missed me.” Solis gave Earl a big grin as they entered Piper Medical Center. “The thrill of working alongside the awesomeness that I am.”
Heaving a huge sigh that spoke of numerous disappointments and much angst, Earl glared at Solis. "Do you know that this is, again!, interrupting my time with Eh'lana? Should I tell you what she was about to do for me?" Earl pinned Solis with a mildly crazed look and leaned toward him.
“Save it for when you get home old man.” Solis shook his head, trying to clear away the image that arose. “Though, looking at her, I can understand. She’s still hot.” He nodded sagely. “Why she puts up with you is beyond me.”
Earl mentally rocked back on his heels. For a moment, he was at a loss for words, then he straightened his uniform tunic and cleared his throat. "Just goes to show, sometimes age, and the wisdom and knowledge that comes with it, far outweigh anything a youngster like you could bring to the table," he said then smiled as Ophelia greeted them.
“Dr. Crane, Dr. Solis.” She smiled at the two men and managed to keep a straight face. “Dr. Harding is waiting for you. Right this way.” She turned to lead them down the main corridor. Solis watched her a moment, then raised his eyebrow at Earl. “You were saying?”
Lowering his voice, Earl commented, "Well, that youngster brings all kinds of curves to the table...." He was watching Ophelia's curves.
Solis bumped his fist to Earl’s. “Indeed.”
Ophelia spoke, still walking and not looking back. “Cut that out you two.”
“Damned Betazoids,” Solis mumbled.
Earl simply smiled and shrugged before obeying her.
Ophelia opened Will’s office door and motioned them in. “Have fun.” She departed once more as they entered the office.
“Welcome gentlemen, have a seat.” Will smiled up at the two men. Solis was a bit less of a shock this time.
"Doc Harding," Earl greeted the man as he took a seat. "Any complications with our patients?"
“Not a one. I was just going over the reports and everything looks good. If neither of you has any objections, they can be released.”
Solis nodded. “I checked in late last night and everything looks good to me. They’ve both made great progress. Earl can do a last exam if you wish.”
"There you go again," grumped Earl, "Offering up my services. Just wait, you'll get yours!" He shook a finger at Solis. "You have a wedding day coming, don't you?"
“I do one of these days. And don’t get any ideas.” Solis narrowed his eyes at Earl.
Across the desk, Will sat laughing at the two of them. "I swear, I should have you two in every day for entertainment if there are no patients. Not that that ever happens. However, since you two seem to be staying a while, I want to add you both to the roster if you don’t mind. For overflow as needed.”
"Oh, sure. Add him to the roster twice," Earl volunteered for Solis.
“We’ll be glad to,” Solis answered. “Whatever you need Doc. And don’t mind him. He grumbles a lot but he’s a good kid.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Will looked from one to the other, now much more at ease and actually enjoying the friendly banter. Earl may appear crusty, but he had the feeling the friendship he was seeing ran deep and wide. “And I’ll take care of the checkout, Earl.”
"Thanks," Earl acknowledged. "He's right: whatever you need, let us know."
“I’ll do that.” Will paused and once more looked from one to the other. “So? Why are you still here? Don’t you have people to visit?”
"You don't have to say that twice!" Earl was up and out the door without another moment's hesitation. He didn't care whether Solis was behind him or not.
“And there he goes, nothing left but a little cloud of Earl-shaped dust.” Solis laughed and stood up. “Take care Will.”
“Absolutely.” Will watched as Solis left the office, leaving him alone now. Things never failed to take an interesting turn on this station.
Never.
