General Description & Personality Overview
Clean cut and attractive are the two appearance qualities that come to mind with Terrell, though he was never really aware of those qualities until after his joining five years ago. He is very concerned with his appearance now and is constantly clean shaven and well dressed.
Terrell’s personality is drastically different before and after the joining. Prior to the joining he was a shy loner that made few friends. A good student and a leading candidate in the Trill Symbiosis Commission, he could have been joined earlier than his twenty-fourth year, but he specifically requested to be the host for the Kona symbiont, which did not become available until the previous host’s, Shalvoy Belack, death. After the joining, Terrell became an outgoing individual that displayed much more confidence than his pre-joined self, once he came to terms with what the joining meant to him and his life.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Terrell’s strengths have also drastically changed after the joining. Prior to the joining, he was a very focused individual whose goals were always at the forefront of his endeavors. Becoming a Starfleet Doctor was what Terrell had striven to become for as long as he could remember. Since the joining though, Terrell’s focus is no longer as direct as it had once been. The additional lifetimes of memories have caused him to become a dilettante of sorts, sometimes seeming to listen to the voices in his head. He is still a more than competent doctor, but as mentioned, his focus has been affected.
Ambitions
Terrell’s ambition is to be the greatest medical doctor in Starfleet. He was never real interested in being joined. His parents were the driving force behind his entry into the Trill Symbiosis program. Terrell’s intelligence and drive to be successful in all his achievements brought him through the Symbiosis program with flying colors. Once chosen by the committee to be a host, he requested to be joined with the Kona symbiont as it had just recently been joined. The Kona symbiont had been joined to the Shalvoy host and Terrell felt it would be a long time before Shalvoy would perish and hence he would miss the age for which joining was acceptable. Terrell never realized what joining would give him and hence never understood how that could help his medical ambitions as well as his career. Unfortunately Shalvoy Kona’s true profession was not public knowledge. It was believed that he was a senior guiding manager in one of the engineering corporations located on Trill. No one knew that Shalvoy Kona was really a special agent in the Fugitive Retrieval Division. His true profession was kept hidden because of the nature of his position. Because of the danger of his position he only lived five years after his joining.
After Terrell’s joining, Terrell was still driven towards medicine, but not in the same way. His hope is to benefit the races of the Federation in a way as to be remembered throughout history.
Hobbies & Interests
Terrell has no interests himself other than medicine. All his interests listed below are from the previous hosts.
Rock Climbing – Mastin Kona
Martial Arts – Shalvoy Kona
Mind Puzzles – Myra Kona
Personal History
Terrell had what most would consider a very good childhood. He was given everything he could ever want by his parents to fuel his passion for medicine. Their only push, in a direction Terrell wasn’t interested in, was when they pushed him to be part of the Trill Symbiosis Program (TSP). Terrell never had an interest in being joined as his passion had only ever been medicine and curing the sick, but he felt denying his parents their one wish for him would be considered disrespectful. So he entered the TSP to please his parents, but the counselors there, immediately appealed to his ambitious side and he excelled in all the programs required of him. He was accepted by the committee and because of his high ranking, was given his choice of symbionts. At that time, Terrell realized that being a host might interfere with his goals for medicine and Starfleet, so he researched the symbionts and chose the Kona symbiont as it had recently, earlier the same year, been joined to host Shalvoy Belack. Shalvoy’s profession was listed as guiding manager of a leading engineering firm on Trill, so his long life span seemed assured, which would cause the symbiont to not be available during Terrell’s early twenties which is when most hosts are joined with symbionts. As it turned out Shalvoy Kona was really employed by Federation Security as a special agent for the Fugitive Retrieval Division, a hazardous job to say the least.
Terrell, having made his choice of a symbiont, turned his attention to Starfleet and took his entrance exam for Starfleet Academy shortly after completing the TSP. The exam was challenging, but this is where Terrell thrived, so he passed and soon after entered the Academy as a cadet studying medical sciences. Terrell’s academy career was uneventful. He had no real hobbies and made few friends, so his focus on his studies assured his success. Only one individual at all stands out in his memory during his academy years and that is Nina Linn. Nina was a Human engineering sciences specialist and her and Terrell became fast friends. Their relationship made it to the next level during their final year at the academy and Terrell asked Nina to marry him, but he didn’t want them to get married until he earned the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, so he could support her and the family they would create. She accepted and the two of them, while going to separate postings, kept in contact and planned their upcoming wedding.
That all changed when Shalvoy Kona met his untimely death at the hands of a Naussican fugitive he and his team were chasing, though the true details of his death were not learned until later. The Trill Symbiosis Committee informed Terrell of Shalvoy’s death and the joining was completed at Starfleet Medical since Terrell was stationed nearby, at Starbase 12, and Shalvoy’s body had been transferred back there for the autopsy. Once the joining was complete, Terrell whole view of life changed and the joined memories and personalities became difficult for him to manage. The TSP training did not prepare him for this, though it should have. He had to take a leave of absence from Starfleet and returned to Trill so the Trill Symbiosis Committee could help him to understand how to deal with life as a joined being.
Terrell stayed with the Symbiosis Committee for just over a year, coming to terms with his new situation. One of the things that the committee performed to help Terrell was the telepathic ceremony of Zhian’tara. It was at that time that both Terrell and the committee determined the true nature of Shalvoy Kona’s profession as well as the details of his death. Terrell was asked to keep Shalvoy Kona’s profession a secret as it could look badly on the Symbiosis Committee if knowledge of Shalvoy’s true profession became public knowledge.
During Terrel’s year plus with the committee, he was constantly contacted by Nina, but Terrell always avoided her. Since the joining, his feelings had drastically changed. One thing not commonly known about joined Trill is that their view of relationships is different. They try to keep themselves above the necessity to attach themselves to other individuals at that level. Terrell now felt this detachment as well, especially given the longevity of the Kona symbiont. He was still attracted to women, in fact his attraction was greater now and he had more success with women, given the memories, feelings, and experiences from the previous hosts. He no longer felt the need to be tied down, the need for the marriage commitment, and he didn’t know how to explain that to Nina. She was Human and would not understand. In some ways he didn’t understand it himself, so he avoided her and didn’t return her calls.
So once Terrell had control of his new life, so to speak, he obtained permission from the Trill Symbiosis Committee to return to duty with Starfleet. The starship USS Kyoshi, a Science vessel, needed a Medical Officer and Terrell thought this would be a good way to get back into his Starfleet career and his medical interests. The Kyoshi was just what the doctor ordered. He had become an even better doctor since the joining than he had been before, drawing on the memories, feelings, and experiences of the previous hosts. It became impossible for him to avoid Nina now though, as he didn’t have the Trill Symbiosis Committee to hide behind any longer, so he finally had to break off their engagement. In an effort to minimize the hurt to her, he attempted to stay friends.
During his time on the Kyoshi, there was an incident where the ship was damaged while on a rescue mission. The Assistant Chief Medical Officer, as well as several other crew members, was killed. Terrell was given a field promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade and became the Assistant Chief Medical Officer for the Kyoshi, because of his service during the disaster. Terrell served as Assistant Chief Medical Officer on the Kyoshi for another six months before deciding he needed a change of venue. He applied for the Assistant Chief Medical Officer on Starbase 900 and was accepted and transferred over to that facility. On the starship, he had handled the day to day medical affairs of the crew. On the starbase he would be handling special cases as they arrived since the base was one of the leading medical facilities in the quadrant. Terrell served on Starbase 900 as Assistant Chief Medical Officer for about six months and realized that even though he was getting the special cases, and the education they provided, he didn’t feel like part of the crew as he had on the Kyoshi. He and his internal family missed that. The starbase’s crew changed constantly. Because of this Terrell started looking for another ship to serve on. He had improved his skills during the last year considerably and wanted to put them to the best use. Terrell then transferred to the USS Berkeley and served there as the Chief Medical officer, but as nature would have it, the situation changed again and the crew was given the chance to serve on the starbase again and once again Terrell found himself on Starbase 900 as the Chief Medical Officer. He didn't feel the same sense of family loss as he did the first time though. But just as he got settled again, he was contacted by Starfleet Medical and they told him his services was needed for a special project and he was ordered to return to Earth. What they needed him for was not a one of his finest moments and he was glad to finally have that period over and to be getting back to some real work as a true medical professional.
