The sun was just beginning its descent towards the ocean out past the quiet beach. A few birds called, some singing their twilight songs before calling it a night. The sounds were a quiet counterpoint to the muted pounding of the surf on the sand. Nico stood in the front door, watching as Dru stood on the front deck in the soft twilight. Her hair had gotten much longer in the time he’d known her and now, as it dried from the shower, it curled and stirred unfettered in the soft breeze. Her skin bore a golden glow from the past several days in the sun and he took in every inch of her as she stood, unmoving.
He wanted to stay right where he was, watching her, marveling that she was his but it was impossible. With silent steps, he approached, stopping behind her and wrapping her in his arms as they both looked out to the sunset.
“You outshine the sun, Dru,” he said softly.
She leaned back into his embrace and smiled. “It’s so beautiful here. It makes it difficult to think about even going back to work.”
“We have to go back tomorrow. Robin needs you.” He kissed the top of her head. “A shame though, it means having to wear clothes again.” He laughed for a moment. “I don’t think your office would approve of your new dress code.”
She smiled and turned. “I don’t know how you’ll cope. Then again, I’m enjoying our dress code myself.” She ran a hand across his chest. “But you’re right. Robin needs me to return. I like to think I’m not easily replaced.”
“I agree with that.” He pulled her closer and this time, the kiss brushed her lips. “You’re his right hand. He’s been really understanding about us taking time away, and putting up with me and all my issues. He’s pretty amazing, but I think he is better when you’re there.”
“He is pretty amazing. And, yes, he has been more than understanding. Overly, so, I think since he’s allowed me so much time off. I’m sure he’s writing it off as recovery time, but it’s probably more than anyone else on the station would ever receive.” She thought a moment. “I’ll need to get him some sort of gift to show my thanks.”
“Good idea.” He smiled down at her, loving the serenity he sensed within her. “What shall we do with our last night here? Before we have to get dressed and get back to the real world?”
“I think what we’ve been doing would be good,” she said with a sultry laugh. “Keep hydrated, eat excellent food, lots of drink and make love and snuggle all day and night. Who knows when we’ll get to do that again when we get back?”
Nico laughed once more. “Well, even when we’re back we’ll have to eat, and drink….and the making love goes without saying. I’ve still not been released for duty and that may be a little while so I have to keep occupied. Besides, your shift is only eight hours…..” He ran his fingertip up along her spine, thrilled when she shivered against him.
“Have you thought about whether or not you’d even go back to work?” she asked, not a bit concerned. “You know you don’t have to, right? You’ve been through so much. I’ll support whatever you decide, but I don’t want you to think that you’re required to do so. You’ve done more than most ever will.”
“I don’t know, to be honest.” He looked out towards the beach, considering her words. “Even if I do, it will likely be a desk job at first….not in the field, not yet. The field..I don’t know Dru. There’s a lot to consider if that ever comes up, mainly you. I don’t want to put you through that.”
She hugged him briefly. “I’m a big girl, Nico, and I know what your job is. I want to grow old with you, but I know the risks. So, take me out of the thought process and you do what you think is right. Okay?”
“We’ll see.” He kissed her deeply, cutting off the conversation for a moment. Finally, he spoke once more. “There is one thing I can guarantee you...I’ll never be able to take you out of my thought process and I don’t want to either.”
“Neither do I.” She slid her hand down. “Can you guess where my thought process is right now?”
He sucked in his breath and smiled. “Telepath remember? Not that I need to be to read…..”
He didn’t speak again for some time.
“Here, drink this.” Nico passed her a glass of wine as he sat back down on the bed. “You said we had to keep hydrated, remember?”
“I meant water, but this will work for now,” she said as she sipped at it. She found a towel to wipe sweat beads from her neck and chest. Letting out a long sigh, she smiled. “That...was amazing. But I think I need a little rest or I’ll pass out. Are there any more of those pineapple-looking things?”
“There are. You want some dinner? I can feed the pineapple-looking things, as you call them while I throw something together.” He sipped from his own glass, then lowered it. “I just realized something else. We have some moving to do when we get back. The rest of your things.”
“Oh, yeah,” she said after a few gulps of the water. “I forgot about that. Luckily, I don’t have much to move so it shouldn’t take long.”
The idea that he was bringing home a wife brought a smile to his face. It was something he had never expected to have….ever. And now, there was Dru. He reached out, tracing the outline of her lips with his finger.
“Robin should be glad I let you out of our quarters.” He was clearly joking.
“I’ll just be happy if I can actually walk to work after our nights alone,” she said with a raise of her eyebrows. She then let out a little giggle. “I’m just so happy about this, Nico. Married, moving in together, it’s all official! I’m your wife!”
“Mine,” he repeated. “I never thought I’d get to this point. I wasn’t sure I’d live out the year to be completely honest.” He smiled and set his glass aside. “I love you.” The words seemed too small, not enough, so he slipped into her thoughts and in an instant, passed to her the enormity of his feelings for her, holding nothing back.
And I love you. She pulled him to her to lay on the bed together. Just feeling him against her was so comforting.
“This is not getting you dinner but is likely to get you other things, my wife.”
“Mine,” she said, repeating his earlier words, and pulling him closer to her. “Dinner can wait a bit.”
“You will get no argument from me.”
