Mission: In Our Time of Need
Location: Thumb's Quarters

* * Somewhere On SB900 * *

Ring stormed into the quarters where Thumb had taken up residence, already talking a mile a minute when the doors opened to let him enter. He was clearly agitated and it took several moments before he wound down enough so that his words were understandable.

"And I couldn't get away from her! It was like she was in my head!" He paused to look at Thumb as if that made perfect sense, forgetting that his erstwhile leader had missed the preceding events.

"Freeze." said Thumb without looking up from his padd, his voice akin to a hiss. "I remember to have chosen the members of this squad for their ability to stay cool. It seems to me you're suffering a bit too much from the tension."

The simple statement assumed the qualities of a warning when spoken by Thumb and Ring knew it well. Taking a deep breath he tried to regain composure.

"Now..." Thumb said leaning on the seat giving an icy stare to his subaltern "Explain."

"I was on the promenade, sitting down, just watching people outside the Nexus. All of a sudden, I got this awful pain in my head, bad enough it made me dizzy. Then I could hear voices...all of them. And I heard her. The Betazoid. She was looking for me. I can;t explain how I knew, I just did. I got moving but she stayed with me, tracking me. Trying to read me. I was getting weaker but then something strange happened. Some male voice threatening her and then just like that," he snapped his fingers, "everything went back to normal."

"So... You're telling me that you can be tracked by this betazoid telepath and that she can possibly read your mind... Is that right?" asked Thumb quietly.

"Well....yes." Ring appeared chagrined as Thumb put it so succintly. "That's about the size of it. I don't htink she had time to see much but it's hard to say. And she knows my face so she will be looking. Perhaps it's better that my face is not seen in the Nexus tonight."

"Are you aware that if this betazoid nuisance reads your thoughts and memories that will turn out to be an embarrassing moment for all the squad?"

Silence fell heavy between them for some instants as Ring's mind flurried with unpleasant images of a very close future.

"Which are our, and therefore your, warranties?" Thumb asked after a while locking his gaze on Ring.

"I am unsure just how far her talents reach. I did get the feeling that she was somehow amplifying herself and seeing far beyond normal for her. If so, she should feel the effects and that perhaps might hinder her. Whatever it was that threatened her, she is afraid of. I have no way to make use of that, it seems to be some being trapped in some other place." He shrugged. "Alter the plan, do not tell me until the last minute what I need to do. "

"Most wise." Thumb commented "Yes, it is better for you to stay out of sight. I'll take the rest of us to the Nexus and you'll stay here. And maybe start working on the inverter have a check on the parts we already heve."

Ring nodded, though not exactly pleased. "And find the last piece?".

"Do as I say. We'll worry about the last piece at due time. I have something to care about after the Nexus. Something that will keep me occupied for a while. If everything goes smooth as I expect we'll strike, end our mission and get out of here soon."

"Very well." Ring nodded and departed to his quarters to begin assembling the inverter.
