Nico watched him go, then took a deep breath before moving closer to the bed. “Dru, I’m sorry. For all of this. It never should have happened.”

“I can honestly say that I don’t think any of this is your fault. All you did was come in for counseling.”

He considered that and frowned slightly. “It was more than that and he knew it, which is why he came after you.” His anger spiked at the thought. “He tried his best to take my life and then here, he tried to take the one thing I care about.”

She looked down at her blanket coyly. His comment didn’t surprise her as much as she thought it would as she had hoped they were becoming more than friends. He made it easy to do, but she wasn’t sure he felt the same.

“So you care about me, huh?” Before he could reply she pressed, “You care, or you care? I don’t want to look like an idiot if I’m thinking something else.”

He looked down at her hand and the silence was palpable for several seconds. Finally, he reached out and wrapped his hand gently around hers. Does that help?

His hand felt strong and warm around hers. She slid her other hand around both of theirs and smiled. She nodded. “It does. And it makes me very happy.”

“To answer your question, no, I didn’t kill him. I didn’t get the chance, though to be honest with you, I wish I had. I intend to find out who did, though, so I can thank him.” He hooked the nearby chair with his foot and pulled it over by the bed, taking a seat, then gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “It’s over.”

“I’m glad. Situations like this make me miss sitting in my chair in the office not going out getting into, or looking for, trouble.” Pulling his hand to her face she added, “But something good did come out of this.”

“We didn’t need him for this, just you,” Nico said simply. “Then again, I might have hesitated too long. I wasn’t so sure if it crossed a line and maybe you thought I was as dangerous as Starfleet seems to.” He shrugged. Given her experience with Daro, maybe he was. His question to Robin rose in his mind and he shoved it aside.

“I’ve learned many things from Robin but the biggie is that Starfleet Medical are rarely correct in their diagnosis of the patients they send out here.” She yawned and looked at the time on the wall. “I think I’m still pretty tired. I don’t expect you to hang around but I may be asleep very soon.”

“You need it. And I’ll stay for a bit...just in case.” He smiled once more. “I’m glad to have you back, Dru.”

“And I’m glad you’re here with me,” she muttered, just before her eyes slammed shut.

“She will be alright, you know.” Nico turned to find Ophelia standing in the door. “Be careful of those worries you carry Nico. That isn’t what she needs. Now go get some sleep, I’ll call you if she wakes up.”

He looked back at Dru, then finally stood. Ophelia was right, he was running on fumes.

“Come, you can stay here tonight.” Ophelia lowered the light and led the way out.
